scheduled reboot delayed to Weds 13th June, 1200 UTC.

yesterday's scheduled reboot didn't happen. sorry! instead it will happen on wednesday at 1200 UTC.

network connectivity and load issues today

There were some network connectivity and load issues today with what appears to be an out of control process owned by a barwen.ch user. Those processes have been killed now and all seems right again.

new web server stuff

Three new web server things this week:

FastCGI, a faster replacement for CGI, is now available for user scripts. Put your FastCGI scripts in ~/public_html/fcgi-bin. You can read about (Fast)CGI on barwen.ch here.

s0 now listens for HTTPS on port 443 so you all the stuff served from the usual s0 web site, including user homedirs, can be served over https. There is only a self-signed certificate, rather than one from the CA mafia.

scheduled reboot 2012-06-08 12:00 UTC

s0.barwen.ch will be rebooted at noon UTC on the 8th of June 2012.

reserved TCP ports

You can now have a reserved TCP port for your account, to run a listening process such as ZNC.

This means other users on barwen.ch are not able to put their own server on the port you were previously listening, if your server processes crashes or has not started up.

To get a port assignment, email support@barwen.ch and ask for one. Your port will be somewhere in the range 512-1023.

When you have your port assignment, you'll need to start your program differently:

ZNC hosting

barwen.ch offers ZNC hosting accounts. Instead of having to configure a shell account, set up public keys, and configure ZNC from the commandline, you can request a ZNC account. Your account will be set up with ZNC built in, and you'll get told a URL and password for ZNC webadmin.

Use the regular signup page, but also email support@barwen.ch with your username, and request that your account be configured for ZNC.

finger server with cgi-like functionaity

s0.barwen.ch is now running efingerd as a finger server. Rather than display general information about a particular user, it will instead invoke .efingerd in that user's home directory and return the output. So barwen.ch users can have custom dynamically generated finger information. Note that if you finger from on s0 itself, you'll get the usual finger information unless you finger user@localhost.

For example:

Welcome, people who are reading the login MOTD

News items off the barwen.ch front page now appear at shell login time, in the motd. Welcome, people who read the motd but never visit the barwen.ch website.

You can also get this news feed via rss.

resized and rebooted

s0.barwen.ch was just rebooted into a larger virtual machine. This means it should be OK to compile things now... You can read about making your bots start at reboot automatically here.
